PARRIS ISLAND, SC -
The commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and the Eastern Recruiting Region has made the decision to cancel this year's 4th of July event on the depot in order to minimize the fiscal impact on vital programs affected by sequestration.
The commanding general did not make this decision lightly as she understands how important this event is to the service members and the local community, but cancelling it will allow the depot to use all available resources to mitigate the current fiscal challenges.
Although the depot will not host a celebration this year, the Parris Island Marine Band is scheduled to perform a mix of patriotic to popular music at the Sand's Beach in Port Royal at 7:30 p.m. July 4 in order to continue to celebrate the holiday with the local, patriotic community.
Following the band's performance, a fireworks display, hosted by the town of Port Royal, will start at approximately 9 p.m.
