Sardis, GA -

***UPDATED at 12:45 P.M. on Monday, June 10th***

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is still on the scene of a deadly shooting at the Sardis Police Department. Investigators are still trying to figure out what happened there early Monday morning.

Here's what GBI investigators tell us:

Around 2:00 a.m. Monday morning, a Sardis Police Department officer discovered that the door to the evidence room had been kicked in. The officer called for backup, thinking there might be a burglary in progress inside the Police Department. Once inside, officers found a male subject, who has been identified as 34-year-old Dwayne Burke.

Investigators say there was some kind of struggle inside of the Police Department and that's when the Sardis Police officer shot and struck Burke, who died at the scene.

We are now learning new details about Burke, who apparently worked for the Sardis Police Department in the past.

GBI investigators say they are not sure why Burke broke into the evidence room, but they did confirm that Burke has been investigated by the GBI in the past.

"He has been in law enforcement, prior law enforcement. I think he was employed here with Sardis. I can't remember the time frame. It's an unfortunate event that happened here this morning," says GBI Special Agent In Charge Pat Morgan.

Coming up during our 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. newscasts, hear from residents in Sardis who knew Burke while he worked for the Sardis Police Department.
