Race for the Cure raises awareness in Raleigh

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Overcast skies and a sprinkling of drizzle didn't stop thousands from participating in the annual Raleigh Race For the Cure, sponsored by the Susan G Komen Foundation.

"I'm overwhelmed," said breast cancer survivor Judie Penney. "This is spectacular show of love and support. Its gets bigger and bigger every single year."

The Race for the Cure has been held in Raleigh and nationwide for the past 17 years. And this year would be no different than those in the past.

75 percent of the funds raised by the race go to local programs that offer a comprehensive range of breast health service in 29 North Carolina counties.

Last year, both UNC and Duke received nearly $2.5 million in grant money from those participating in the race.

"We need money for a cure," said race participant Donna Reiser. "We need support."
