RALEIGH, N.C. -

It has already gained national attention and now, the weekly "Moral Monday" protests at the North Carolina General Assembly are gaining congressional attention.  Democratic Congressman G.K. Butterfield announced Friday he would join protestors Monday.

So far, more than 300 people have been arrested in the weekly demonstrations organized by North Carolina's chapter of the NAACP.  Earlier this week, an estimated 1,600 people protested republican policies on healthcare, voting rights, education spending and tax reform.

Butterfield said, "I've been deeply troubled by the severe and unilateral cuts being made by the Republican-led legislature in North Carolina.  The cuts to healthcare, education, and unemployment insurance, just to name a few, disproportionately target low-income people, many of whom I represent in the U. S. House of Representatives."

Monday's protest will include the support of dozens of religious leaders from across the state and be led by several Durham pastors.

Butterfield will be the first federal elected official to join the protest.

"As a participant in the 1963 March on Washington, and as a former civil rights attorney, I have seen firsthand how peaceful, civil demonstrations can affect change," Butterfield said in a release. "Based on the turnout at the General Assembly over the past few weeks, change is already being realized."

The Congressman will also deliver remarks during the protest.
