Letter Documents Reason for Wilkins' Firing

Posted: Updated:

Evans, GA (WJBF) -- A letter from Greenbrier Principal Chris Segraves to Chris Wilkins dated June 6, 2013, documents why the Wolfpack baseball coach was fired on Monday.

According to the letter, the baseball concession stand balance was in the negative more than $1600 for the third straight year. As WJBF Sports reported on Wednesday, Segraves had warned Wilkins in a previous letter in 2012 that if the concession monies were in the red again, Wilkins position as head coach of the varsity baseball program would be in jeopardy.

Here's an excerpt from the letter: "Mr. Wilkins, Coaching at Greenbrier High School encompasses more than wins and losses. One of the many other responsibilities includes the proper handling of money, including accurately counting, properly receipting, and making timely deposits of money as required by Board policy and procedure. It also includes making purchases with either a school check or a purchasing card to ensure that funds are being properly dispersed and accounted for."

The letter does not mention any other reasons for dismissal. There was no mention of the documented complaints of parents in 2010.

Coach Wilkins has yet to speak publicly about the situation.
