Drought Affecting Beef Prices

Posted: Updated:

The drought that is affecting parts of the southwest is so severe that it is driving up the cost of food for cows.

That means the price of beef at the store is also soaring to record highs for this time of year.

Linzie Janis hit the barbecue circuit to find cheaper alternatives.

Americans firing up the grill, but that sizzle you hear just might be the price of the beef.

Today your ground beef burger costs $3.26 a pound -  up 9 percent from a year ago.

A sirloin steak?  $6.86 a pound - up 7% over last summer.

"I'm buying less beef, because prices they seem to be going up"

Blame it on soaring demand for us beef from around the world, while that drought is wiping out the feed… making it very expensive to raise the cattle.

So what to do?

Tips from barbeque grills all over America poured in today- Kathy from Virginia says she's mixing black beans & bread crumbs with her ground beef to make it stretch.

While Lynn from Washington says for her family turkey is the new t-bone of this summer.

But we also talked to Chef Wally Weaver at the 3 forty grill in Hoboken, New Jersey.

"So Wally, Americas at home this summer want to barbeque save a little money what's your top tip for them?"

"I recommend not to change in quality but go for a smaller portion size, that way you save a little money and you still get what you want to eat."

"It's a couple of ounces and we have awesome sides that we serve with the steaks and the other dishes you don't really notice."

A restaurant trick that will serve your family well as experts tell us there's no end in sight for these red hot prices.
