Lovette gets life in prison in Eve Carson murder case

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -

One of two men convicted in the 2008 death of UNC Chapel Hill president Eve Carson was resentenced Monday, and received life in prison with no parole.

Laurence Alvin Lovette, 22, was originally sentenced to life without parole. However, a U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it's unconstitutional to give an automatic life sentence to someone who was under the age of 18 at the time of the crime.

But Monday, the judge gave Lovette life in prison without parole, saying in court that it was unlikely Lovette would be rehabilitated in prison.

In court Monday, Lovette said, "Nobody is perfect. I am not the monster you made me out to be."

Lovette was 17 when Carson was killed. He was convicted of premeditated murder, kidnapping and robbery.

Carson's parents were in the courtroom and appeared pleased by the decision, but did not comment to the media afterward.

The state Court of Appeals ordered that Lovette be resentenced after the high court decision.
