Savannah River Remediation (SRR) President and Project Manager Dave Olson is leaving the Savannah River Site and taking over as President and Project Manager of Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) effective July 1st.
Read the text of an email he sent to SRR employees on Thursday below:
"It is with a humble heart I tell you that I have accepted the position of President and Project Manager of Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) effective July 1, 2013. Mike Johnson, a former Savannah River Site (SRS) high-level waste manager, is retiring from that position at the end of June. The WRPS contract, located at Hanford in the State of Washington, involves managing high-level waste in tanks similar to those at SRS.
Today is a time of mixed emotions for me. There is the thrill, as you can imagine, that comes with facing the next challenge in my life. However, there is also a real sadness in leaving so many outstanding people who are part of the Savannah River Remediation (SRR) success story.
It is an honor to have served with you to bring about the lasting accomplishments through this contract, from glassifying high-level waste at record levels, to creating and operating the nation's only salt-waste disposal facilities, to operationally closing two waste tanks last year. Rest assured, I will be watching from afar as you close the two additional waste tanks this summer!
URS leads both the SRR and WRPS contacts, and both missions revolve around protecting the environment from high-level radioactive waste. It is a mission I understand well; it is a job I undertake with great enthusiasm.
I will start transitioning to my new duties in mid-June. SRR Operations and Deputy Project Manager Stuart MacVean has been named the interim SRR President and Project Manager. He understands our mission as well as I do. He will continue to lead this organization to greater successes. I know you will give him the same kind of strength and encouragement you constantly gave me.
As I reflect on my departure, I realize one key point: I am not really leaving you. I am taking you along in terms of your sound ideas, bold innovations and incredible expertise you bring to bear on our high-level waste mission every day. Your resounding performance will never be forgotten.
There will be plenty of good-byes to come, and lots of memories to share before I leave. However, there is no doubt that your friendship is what I will remember most. Continue to work safely and be your brother's keeper. I wish you the best."
