Pair of USC Aiken Women's Basketball Players Transfer

Posted: Updated:

Aiken, SC (WJBF) -- The USC Aiken women's basketball team is losing 2 key players, both of whom are transferring to Wingate University. 2012 Preseason All-American Kayla Harris and Brittany Hill both asked for and were granted their releases from the program.

Harris, who has one year of eligibility remaining, suffered a torn ACL and MCL last season and played in just 13 games. The Pacers who were ranked as high as 3rd in the nation, went just 10-7 without. She was the Pacers leading scorer before the injury averaging 18.2 points per game.

Harris told the Aiken Standard, who first reported the news of the transfers, "The program is just headed in a direction I didn't agree with, so I decided it was best for me to remove myself from that situation,"

Hill also has one year of eligibility remaining, but she will have to sit out a year because this is her second transfer. Hill averaged 8.1 points and 5.9 assists per game last year for the Pacers. Hill's assist average was 5th in the nation.

Hill, also in an interview with the Aiken Standard, said, ""There were a lot of changes throughout (last) season, and I felt I should go somewhere else. … It was not one incident. It was just a bunch of little things that piled up."

We were unable to reach Coach Mike Brandt for a statement on the transfer of two of his key seniors. Athletic Director Randy Warrick said, "Kayla and Brittany were good student-athletes for us, and we wish them well in their future endeavors."

A returning member of the Pacers team told WJBF Sports that Brittany and Kayla's opinions were not shared by the entire team and that the two of them just didn't see eye-to-eye with Coach Brandt.

Wingate University released a statement (on May 15th) about the signing of four transfers, including Harris and Hill. In the statement, Wingate University head women's basketball coach Ann Hancock said about Harris, ""Kayla has been a dominant force in the Peach Belt," Hancock says. "Her ability to score, rebound and find open players will be a great addition on both ends of the floor. She is a true competitor with an intensity which will raise our level of play in every phase of the game. Her passion to be the best is contagious."

Hancock went on to say the following about Brittany Hill, "Brittany is a true floor general who knows how to run a team and lead others to do more than they thought they could," Hancock says. "She is driven to excel in everything on which she sets her sights. Brittany is a blue-collar player who does what others don't want to do. Brittany sets others up to score and gets them the ball where they can be successful," Hancock says. "Her defensive effort also sets her apart from others. Brittany has established herself as a leader in the PBC and nationally in assists and steals. She is what a team wants as a point guard, a coach on the floor."
