Democrats pick Grier Martin to replace Ross in House

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A former North Carolina House member is returning to the chamber to replace a fellow Wake County Democrat who's stepping down.

Wake Democratic leaders chose Grier Martin of Raleigh to succeed Rep. Deborah Ross, who announced earlier this month she was leaving the House after 10 years to become general counsel to the Triangle Transit Authority.

Ross said she nominated Martin to the post at a Wake County Democrats' meeting Tuesday night. Martin was the only candidate.

Gov. Pat McCrory is obligated by state law to appoint Martin to fill out the remainder of Ross' term through the end of 2014.

Martin served previously for eight years but didn't run in 2012 when redistricting lines put Martin and Ross in the same district.

Ross' resignation takes effect June 1.
