Augusta Leaders Looking At Plan To Spruce Up Broad Street

Augusta, GA -

Parking is not the only thing in downtown Augusta that could be sporting a whole new look.

City leaders are looking at a plan called the Urban Veranda Concept, which would create an elevated pedestrian area above the parking bays on Broad Street, across from the Augusta Common.

As of right now, it is only an idea.

Supporters range from Mayor Deke Copenhaver to the Downtown Development Authority and Commissioner Marion Williams, who says it could be a needed shot in the arm for downtown.

"This is really going to make people want to come downtown, this is going to help the downtown businesses grow. It won't eliminate none of the parking. The parking would still be there, but it would be something different and very unique, so I'm excited about it," Williams says.

City engineers estimate the cost at about $2 million and say funding could be available from the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (T-SPLOST) that passed last year.
