The bridge leading to the Fort Pulaski National Monument from Highway 80 is closed Thursday, after a Shrimp Boat reportedly crashed into the structure Wednesday morning.
The incident, believed to be an accident, happened just before 11:00 Wednesday. No injuries were reported, but the bridge is closed to traffic. Officials with the Fort Pulaski National Monument say Federal Experts will be on location Thursday to evaluate the overall safety of the bridge. Early reports say the bridge did not sustain significant damage.
Employees and visitors to the monument were able to leave the island late Wednesday, after engineers conducted an initial evaluation.
