INVERNESS, FL (WFLA) -

At the Withlacoochee Technical Institute in Citrus County on Friday, deputies from the Sheriff's Office took part in a training scenario where two gunmen have entered the school.

A firefight scenario, using blanks, played out in the hallway.

Sergeant Bobby Lambert says the simulation was different than what he is used to.

"A lot of noise. A lot of distractions. They're screaming. Simulated live ammunition, it kind of overloads the senses," said Lambert.

In the school cafeteria, students turned over tables for protection as deputies moved in and took down another bad guy.

Sheriff Jeff Dawsy says that the training these deputies get is invaluable when it comes to preparing them for a real life situation.

"Our responsibility to the citizenry is that we have to go we have to locate this individual. We have to isolate the treat and then we have to terminate the treat and we have to do it very quickly," Sheriff Dawsy said.

Members of Citrus Fire Rescue also took part by removing a fallen deputy, while being protected by other armed deputies.

Sheriff Dawsy says that this training exercise is not based on a particular real-life incident, but rather a situation that could happen.

"There's great dangers out there and we have to build our reaction based on scenarios that we don't know," said Sheriff Dawsy.
