Last weekend for St. Petersburg Pier

Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

Whether the controversial Lens is ever constructed, the current St. Petersburg Pier is closing.  This is the last weekend you can stroll along the iconic landmark or shop inside the inverted pyramid.

Stores are offering deep discounts during their final days. The Aquarium is advertising a 50% off "Whale of a Sale." Crystal Mirage is even trying to sell its decorative doors. Inside Sunwatchers, everything from jewelry to clothing is discounted.

"I've got my displays on sale," said the store owner Mary Matthews. "Pretty much everything is for sale."

Matthews said her hottest sellers are mugs and magnets with pictures of the pier on them.

"Everyone wants a memento, don't you think?"

The pier and all of its shops and restaurants close May 31.

"After that, we'll have to start moving everybody out and getting the building ready to turn over to the city," explained the Pier General Manager Carol Everson.

The tenants have until the middle of July to move out. Matthews said she'll take all of her unsold merchandise at Sunwatchers to her other retail location in John's Pass Village. Other shops are closing down for good and a lot of employees are searching for new jobs.

The last weekend at the pier should be a busy one.  A farewell party kicks off Friday at 7 p.m. with salsa dancing.  Music and festivities will continue through the holiday weekend. The celebration wraps up Monday night with fireworks.

The City of St. Petersburg plans to demolish the pier later this year.
