Tampa woman charged with cheating employer out of $56K

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

An employee embezzled more than $56,000 in a course of 13 months from a local company which handles workers compensation claims, according to a Sarasota County Sheriff's Office report.

The manager of Broadspire, a Tampa division of Crawford & Company, reported a possible theft when its client saw a larger sum than expected on a tax form from Broadspire. The company's internal investigation lead to Joanne Bell, 37.

Sarasota County Sheriff's Office detectives found out that Bell, who worked as a claims examiner, issued checks to clients but mailed them to her postal box in Sarasota.

She sent a total of 35 check and deposited $56,195.66 to her account at Chase Bank according to the investigation report.

Sarasota County deputies arrested her on Monday charging her with scheme to defraud.  She has since been released on $20,000 bond.
