It's a headache for many traveling from Water Street onto I-10 and the cause of many complaints to the Department of Transportation.
"It's a lot, we have a lot of accidents at that ramp alone," says Preconstruction Engineer with ALDOT Don Powell.
139 accidents in the last three years to be precise. So why hasn't it been fixed already? According to ALDOT, there was $25 million set aside for just that project in the late 80's, early 90's. However, it went untouched for 20 years.
"The project progressed to some point, I don't know what point that was, and then for some reason it stopped again. I wasn't here at the time so I don't why it stopped," says Powell.
A mistake that cost them $9 million when the feds decided to take back some of that unused money. With $16 million left, the department is picking up where they left off.
The plan is to make a more standard interchange. They're going to close down the Water Street ramp and push everything back to Canal Street, making everything calmer and safer for everyone.
Drivers aren't the only ones happy about the project. Carol Hunter with the Downtown Mobile Alliance says an added bonus is the project frees up about 20 acres of land ripe for development.
"And since it would be connected to Fort Conde Village which has undergone this amazing renaissance in recent years, that could be just a real gem to be polished," says Hunter.
ALDOT is going to try to raise that $9 million that was lost. They hope plans for the project will be finished by next summer and they hope to dig in their shovels soon after. And of course the actual construction portion is going to be very difficult, they expect that part to last close to two years.
