Tampa Bay Buc's head coach: "Freeman is our starting quarterback"

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Greg Schiano wants to clear up any confusion about the Buccaneers' quarterback situation.

"We have a starting quarterback. It's Josh Freeman," Schiano said. "I'm not looking to find a new one."

Schiano's comments are a response to story published Sunday on National Football Post that quotes Schiano as saying he was "not against" rookie Mike Glennon winning the starting quarterback job this year.

The story further fueled speculation from national media the Bucs' brass was not pleased with Freeman.

"That's inaccurate," Schiano said. "I believe in competition, but I also believe that Josh Freeman is our starting quarterback."

Last season, Freeman set franchise records in passing yards (4,065) and passing touchdowns (27), but was wildly erratic during a late-season five-game losing streak. The Bucs then used their third round pick to draft Glennon while Freeman enters the final year of his contract.

Freeman said there was "no question" it was his team but welcomed the addition of Glennon. "If something happens to me, you want a guy who can keep it going and win some games," said Freeman.

Freeman also has an advantage over Glennon in the knowing the Bucs' playbook. "I think my college [North Carolina State] prepared me well for it," Glennon said, "But it's definitely more intense. There's more to it. It's more complex."

Schiano also wanted to squash rumors of a strained relationship between him and Freeman.

"Believe it or not, we actually have a good relationship," said Schiano.

"I've gotten to know Coach Schiano pretty well, and he's a guy you're proud to play for," Freeman said.
