Lakeland restaurant partners with school for garden

Posted: Updated:

Zack Walker is an 8th grader at Lakeland Montessori. He's among the students who plant, tend and watch closely over a small garden outside the Red Door Wine Market in Lakeland.

"The entire school is actually incorporated in all of this. A couple of weeks ago, everyone came out in different series of groups and helped plant and put in all the soil and some people helped with like irrigation," Walker said.

Walker and his classmates are tending the garden, which is a partnership between Red Door Wine Market and the school.  The students are responsible for the lettuce, peppers, onions and everything that grows here.

In turn, when customers come in nearly every veggie they order is fresh - so fresh it was likely picked shortly before it was served. The owner, Richard DeAnglis says it's a win-win because it provides fresh local vegetables.
"It's lets people know that green spaces should be utilized," DeAngelis said.

And in the process he said, teaches young people some key and needed skills.
"They did all the work, they dug the ground, they moved the soil and they've done everything."
But the lessons don't end there.

7th grader Vanessa Vailoces learned a lot more than just gardening.

"This has helped me a lot with learning how to finance and how to predict costs of how much we're gonna charge when they harvest the plants," Vailoces said.

So the next time you stop by Red Door Wine Market on Palmetto Street in Lakeland and order dinner, you are unknowingly investing in education on many levels.
