We received an email from one concerned driver who says she's nearly been hit several times at this interchange at Rangeline Road from people failing to yield as they merge onto an I-10 access road. Most of the confusion comes from the fact that it's in the middle of an active construction project. ALDOT Construction Engineer Matt Ericksen says they're widening I-10 from four to six lanes and says they keep an eye on it.
"We do a traffic analysis and if it called for a merge sign or a yield sign, we would put one in place. Right there at that current location it's kind of follow the rules of the road right there," says Ericksen.
In the short amount of time that we were out at the interchange, we saw a few near-accidents. One man who didn't want to go on camera says his fiancée almost ran into a concrete barrier when she couldn't get over in time to let speeding mergers over in her lane.
We asked others what they thought. Robert Dennis told us on Facebook he was almost hit by a semi truck one day driving with his wife in the car. Maria Faulkner says they need to get done with construction already, and Tracy Copeland agrees, adding, "it's a mess".
"We've got some narrow lanes and construction signs up so with all the vehicles that travel through that project, we are experiencing congestion," says Ericksen.
Jonathan Moseley has a different concern, stating this area is dark and is need of some lighting. Ericksen says lights are not in the plan, but the department will raise funds to conduct a study to see if lights are needed.
The project to widen I-10 began in February of 2011; they say it should be finished fall of this year.
Many other comments we received said folks are just not as alert as they should be these days and no amount of signage will change that.
