Jags’ Antcliff 20th At NCAA Regional

Posted: Updated:

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State's Maverick Antcliff turned in his second straight sub-par round Friday during the second round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional at Golden Eagle Golf & Country Club in Tallahassee, Fla.

Antcliff piled up six birdies, including five in his last 10 holes, and battled back from a slow start to post a 1-under 71. ASU junior Alex Wennstam managed five birdies of his own en route to a 4-over 76. Antcliff is tied for 20th at 4-under 140 heading into Saturday's third and final round, while Wennstam is tied for 47th at 3-over 147. Off the 75 players in the field, 29 shot under par or better on Friday compared to 35 players in Thursday's first round.

Wennstam and Antcliff tee off No. 10 Saturday at 9:20 and 9:40 a.m., respectively, in the third and final round. The ASU duo earned at-large individual bids from the NCAA on Monday, May 6 when the field of 81 teams and 45 individuals were selected for the six regional sites. Live scoring of the Tallahassee Regional is available at www.golfstat.com and full-field results are available at www.golfstatresults.com/public/leaderboards/team/static/team4402.html.

A junior from Gothenburg, Sweden, Wennstam played in 11 events for the Jaguars during the regular season. He ranked second on the squad in stroke average (74.03) to Antcliff and led the team in rounds of par or better (13). He enjoyed a strong spring campaign, improving to a 72.79 scoring average in six spring events.

Antcliff, a freshman from Beaudesert, Australia, made a big splash in his first season as an active member of the program. In six events during the spring, Antcliff posted a team-low 73.0 stroke average and squad-best four top-20 finishes. He tied for 16th in his collegiate debut at the Puerto Rico Classic and shot a 3-under 69 in his first round as a Jaguar. In the final round of the Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Intercollegiate, he fired a 4-under 66 to spark the Jags to the team title.

North Florida, ranked 19th in the nation, maintained its first-round lead with an 11-under 277. Sixth-ranked Washington enjoyed the day's low round, a 13-under 275, and pulled within two strokes. Florida State is in third place, just four shots back of UNF, while Oregon is fourth at -14. Georgia Tech and South Florida are tied for the fifth and final qualifying spot at -12. Individually, MJ Maguire (11-under 133) of UNF owns a one-shot advantage over Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan.

The six regionals are three-day, 54-hole events slated for Thursday-Saturday, May 16-18. The top five teams and top individual not on an advancing team from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, which are slated for May 28-June 2 at the Capital City Club's Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Ga.
