BROOKSVILLE, FL (WFLA) -

A local Hernando County couple are terrified of the new family of foxes that have moved in to a vacant tortoise den on their property.

"Terrified. Terrified. I shouldn't have to live with this," says Marie Dudek-Kurtz.

Dudek-Kurtz moved in to the Brookridge community with her husband to relax in the peaceful subdivision in Brooksville.

They live next to the golf course where they often see rabbits and squirrels. But according to Dudek-Kurtz, the peace ended two weeks ago when a family of foxes moved in to a tortoise den on their property.

"We saw more of them coming and staying and they were there at night and there in the morning." said Dudek-Kurtz.

The foxes have not been very neighborly.

Dudek-Kurtz also said, "They chewed up a lot of our sprinkler system wires. They eat all the stuff off the wires and our patio lights. They destroyed many of them."

The foxes left paw prints on their car and have scattered the carcasses of rabbits and squirrels in their yard.

The couple fears that their dog might be attacked too.

Dudek-Kurtz contacted the management at Brookridge and was told the foxes are her problem.

She added, "When I spoke to security here he tells me that they have several fox families living right in here...so that makes it ok?"

The Kurtzs contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and were told that if they wanted to get rid of the foxes, that they would have to hire a trapper.

Hiring a trapper can be very expensive.  A local company said the cost would be $325 just to set the trap.  It would be an additional charge for each fox removed.

The couple said they don't have that kind of money.  FWC suggested that the couple do it themselves or have a friend or relative do it, but Marie says that they don't want to get near them.

Many residents in the neighborhood said they enjoy watching the foxes during their evening strolls.

The Kurtzs responded by saying, "they can have them."
