Rudder Meets The Road In Georgia

Augusta, GA -

Rudder to Road. It's a new law that starts Wednesday for Georgia and it affects everyone out on the water.

The legal limit is now point zero eight, down two tenths from point one zero.

That means you can't drink as much as you used to when driving boats and personal watercraft.

Rosa Irizarry of Augusta says, "I think that's a great idea. There's too many wrecks and drunk driving. Yeah I'm against that because I was involved when a drunk driver hit me."

Irizarry knows first-hand what it feels like to be hit by a drunk driver.

"I was really upset, he was drinking. I tried to get his name and number and his writing was really slurred so I knew he was drunk. The officer that was at the court with me stated that he was drunk," said Irizarry.

And another Augustan agrees with lowering the limit, but Floyd Parrish says there are still some that won't follow the law.

Floyd Parrish of Augusta says, "You got some folk that don't care. They still gonna drink and drive and ride on the lake and stuff."

And if you do choose to drink and drive on the roadways or on the waterways the Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, Harris Blackwood, has a stern warning for you, "It's your god-given right to drink as much as you want to. But when you get behind the wheel of a boat or a car you're in violation of the law and you will be punished to the fullest extent of the law."

The difference between point zero 8 and point one zero is only one drink for most people, but…

Colonel Mark McDonough of the Georgia State Patrol says, "One drink could mean the difference between life and death. Not only your own but to an innocent victim that you could cause that death."
