Smithfield teen won't appeal suspension in gun arrest

Posted: Updated:
SMITHFIELD, N.C. -

A student who left two unloaded guns in his car on school property has dropped his appeal to graduate with his classmates at Princeton High School.

Jim Lawrence, Johnston County School Board attorney, said Cole Withrow, 18, will  not take any further action in appealing Superintendent Ed Croom's decision to suspend Withrom long term.

A hearing officer upheld the suspension after an initial appeal. The suspension is not an expulsion and allows Withrow the ability to graduate in June.

Withrow will attend an alternative school, South Campus Community School in Smithfield, and if he completes requirements there can graduate from that school on June 7, Lawrence said.

Withrow was arrested April on a felony charge of bringing a weapon onto school grounds after he left the guns in his car at Princeton High School.

He had gone to the principal's office to explain his mistake and was taken into custody.

In situations like this, the school superintendent says a student is assigned to an alternative program in Smithfield to complete their school requirements.
