USC Aiken Earns Second Seed in Southeast Regional

INDIANAPOLIS – The nationally top-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team claimed an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship late Sunday evening.


The NCAA Division II Baseball selection committee unveiled the 48-team field during a live selection show on NCAA.com. The 2013 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship will be composed of eight six-team, double-elimination regionals. 

The 48-team field features 20 automatic qualifiers. USC Aiken received one of 28 at-large bids to the 2013 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. 

The Pacers earned the No. 2 in the Southeast Region, which will be hosted by Mount Olive. The NCAA Division II Southeast Regional will be held Thursday, May 16-Sunday, May 19. 

The Pacers will face off against 2013 Peach Belt Conference Tournament champion and regional fifth-seeded Georgia College (33-17) in the opening round of the regional at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. 

Despite being Peach Belt Conference foes, USC Aiken and Georgia College did not meet during the 2013 regular-season. 

Armstrong (31-15) claimed the third seed in the regional and will face off against fourth-seeded/Conference Carolinas Tournament champion Coker (34-14) at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 16 in the opening round of the regional. 

Mount Olive (46-6) has hosted the Southeast Regional in each of the last three seasons and five times in the last seven years. Mount Olive will take on South Atlantic Conference Tournament champion/regional sixth-seeded Lincoln Memorial (26-24) at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 16 in the opening round. 

Games are scheduled for 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. each of the first three days of the regional and the championship game is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m. A second game could be played Sunday if necessary.

The winner of the double-elimination NCAA Division II Southeast Regional will advance to the NCAA Division II National Finals May 25-June 1 at the USA National Training Center in Cary, N.C. Mount Olive and the Town of Cary serve as co-hosts of the National Finals that feature the eight regional winners. 

USC Aiken is making its eighth trip to the NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament (1992, 1993, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013). 

The Peach Belt Conference regular-season champion Pacers closed out the regular-season with a 41-9 overall record. The Pacers were 24-6 in league play in the 2013 regular-season.

USC Aiken enters the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional with a 41-11 overall record. 

The 2013 Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship was the second for USC Aiken in the last five years. The Pacers also obtained the league regular-season title in 2009. 

The Pacers have three regular-season championships in school history now as they also acquired the 1994 regular-season title. USC Aiken has two Peach Belt Conference Tournament championships (1992 and 1993) in its history.

USC Aiken's regular-season-closing three-game sweep of Georgia Southwestern left the Pacers having claimed 11 of its 13 three-game series in the 2013 regular-season (Lincoln Memorial, Carson-Newman, Shepherd, Francis Marion, Flagler, Young Harris, North Georgia, Augusta State, Lander, Columbus State and Georgia Southwestern). 

The Pacers swept three-game series from Lincoln Memorial, Shepherd, Flagler, Young Harris, North Georgia, Augusta State, Lander and Georgia Southwestern.
