Aiken County, SC -

An Aiken man is without a home tonight after investigators say a fire destroyed his house, and his 3 pets.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. at a home on Tennessee Street, just off Hampton Avenue in Aiken.

"So far, it's been an awful day," said Bruce Jackson.

A huge gaping hole and charred debris shows the extent of the damage left from a house fire in Aiken.

"After 53 years living in the same place, it is pretty hard," said Jackson.

"Right now it's only what I am wearing and that scooter over there," said Jackson.

Bruce Jackson who lives here wasn't home at the time but says he's lost more than just a roof over his head.

"I've lost all my possessions and 2 cats and a dog. Losing my animals was that much harder," said Jackson.

"We've been told that there are several dozen cats. We've only been able to recover 1 or 2," said Sgt. Jake Mahoney.

"My animals mean a lot to me. It's like losing a mother or brother. That was my company, and my family."

Jackson says he feeds many stray cats nearby. Now – he says has to deal with an uncertain future.

"I've been unemployed for 10 months. I can't find a job anywhere," said Jackson.

"I don't know what could be next. I lost my job, I lost my home, and I lost my animals. I can't tell you," said Jackson.

Fire crews had to wait until the SCE&G power crews arrived because the house was still actively charged.

Investigators aren't sure what started the fire.
