New program in Pinellas helps poor pet owners keep animals

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

It's a sad statistic. The number one reason owners surrender their pets to the Humane Society of Pinellas, is because they've fallen on hard times. "There are so many people out there who don't want to turn in their animals but they don't know where to go and don't know what resources are out there," said Sarah Brown, executive director, Humane Society of Pinellas.

To provide assistance to pet owners, The Humane Society launched the new program called Pinellas Alternatives to Shelter Surrender, or PASS. It can help connect pet owners to resources like low cost spay and neuter clinics, free vaccinations, and pet food.

It costs about $675 a year to feed and care for a medium-sized dog. That's more than $50 a month and more than some families can afford.

Pet owners can call a hotline,727-755-1738, or go to the PASS web site for information.

It puts together help that's available from animal friendly agencies and organizations all over Pinellas county.

It also has links to find pet friendly apartment complexes...and pet training.

"Anybody is eligible for the help. If you need help, we're there to help you so there's no financial criteria we're looking for. You never know when someone needs that help," said Brown.
