Pinellas motorcycle accident; man loses leg, head trauma

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

The Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is investigating a serious motorcycle crash in which a man's leg was severed.

According to investigators, motorcyclist Donald Budd Sutton, 45, was traveling from the Duhme Causeway onto the Bay Pines triangle interchange.  Deputies say as Sutton was negotiating the turn onto Bay Pines Boulevard, he drifted onto the guard rail which cut off his left leg.

Deputies say Sutton then lost control, was ejected from the motorcycle and sustained serious injuries to his head.

Sutton was transported by air to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries.  Sutton was not wearing a helmet.

Neither alcohol nor speed appears to be factors in the crash.  Sutton's is from Madeira Beach.

The investigation continues.
