**UPDATED May 10, 2013**
Bangladesh rescue workers have freed a woman trapped for 17 days in the rubble of a collapsed building.
The rescuers discovered the woman Friday afternoon and ordered an immediate halt to their salvage operation. They used handsaws to cut her out of the rubble and the crowd gathered at the scene erupted in cheers.
The woman, wearing a violet dress, was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
The death toll from the collapse of a garment factory in Bangladesh passes 1,000 deaths on Friday.
For the 17th day, recovery workers continue searching though the tangled wreckage.
The owners of the building and the factories are under investigation over accusations they ordered workers to enter the premises on the day of the collapse despite cracks in the structure the day before.
An architect whose firm designed the building says it never was designed to handle heavy industrial equipment, let alone the three floors that were later illegally added.
