South Carolina Senate Searches for Money to Fix Roads

Blacksburg, SC -

A showdown is looming in the South Carolina Senate over efforts to find extra money for the state's crumbling roads and bridges.

Senators will soon debate a proposal to borrow $1.3 billion and tie the gas tax to inflation.

While raising the gas tax would bring in new money, it faces stiff opposition. The House rejected raising the tax, opting instead to send about $100 million in sales tax revenue from vehicle purchases to roads. Gov. Nikki Haley has suggested putting extra revenue toward roads as the economy improves and prioritizing spending. She also has promised to reject any tax increase.

The state Department of Transportation says it needs $29 billion in the next 20 years to get the state's roads and bridges back to good condition.
