GREENVILLE, SC -

Her work week was nearly over, Jeri Chastain recalled as she talked about the years when she was a medical transcriptionist at the former Doctors Memorial Hospital.

It was a Thursday in 1990 she said.

"We got paid on Thursdays and I normally took my check to the bank to deposit it," said Chastain.

That day however, hunger beat out the bank and Jeri put her wallet in a drawer at her desk and went to get a snack.

" Five min! I couldn't have been gone more than 5 minutes because the elevator was next to my door and I got crackers and a coke and came right back," she said.

Five minutes turned out to be just long enough for someone to steal things from her desk. She opened the drawer and the wallet was gone.

"It rocked my world. I kind of think I know who took it, but filed a police report," said Chastain.

In that report she said she made it clear; it wasn't the wallet she needed back but what was inside.

"It's my baby you know my only baby. He's my only child and to have his pictures, especially to have him in his dad's outfit the one his dad wore home from the hospital that's priceless to me and him," she said.

23 years later her son is grown up but the pictures haven't changed.

The wallet was returned to her after a construction worker, Jeff Anders, found the wallet while he was cleaning a ceiling tile in the hospital.

"I opened it up and found a drivers license and from the picture I could tell it was old," he said.

More than two decades have gone by but receipts, credit cards and family photos haven't aged at all.

"For the longest time I wouldn't even buy another wallet. I said I'm not putting my stuff in something for someone to take again," said Chastain.

A total stranger gave Jeri a piece of her past back and changed her future for good.
