Augusta Water Department Needs Space For Those Paying Bills

Posted: Updated:

Paying your water bill in person in Augusta could soon get more difficult.

Renovations at the Augusta Municipal Building are forcing the Augusta Utilities Department to close its customer service office in September.

The department wants to move to the ANIC building on Laney Walker Boulevard, but an Augusta Commission committee opposed that idea because of its nearly two million dollar cost.

That has water officials now searching for a place to move.

"The Laney Walker building, too expensive was the message find someplace cheaper can you do that?" we asked Utilities Department Director Tom Wiedmeier.

"I think we could, it's just what we would have to do to get it ready. Timing is critical, I felt like the price that that building was a fair price," says Wiedmeier.

Even though he was rejected by the Engineering Services Committee, Wiedmeier plans to make the case for downtown customer service at the ANIC building at the Commission meeting next week.
