A top to bottom renovation of Augusta's marble palace is underway.
Officials broke ground today on the 40-million dollar makeover of the Municipal Building.
The face lift will flip the building's entrance to Telfair Street and include a new elevator tower system to meet A-D-A requirements.
The building opened in 1957 and the mayor says it's time for an upgrade,
"I won't get to enjoy it a lot myself next years is my last year still for future employees for future commissions for the tax payers of our city it's time," says Mayor Deke Copenhaver.
The plan is for the city to borrow 26-million dollars for the project, and then pay off bonds using future sales tax revenue
The renovations should take less than a year and a half with the completion date set for December of 2014.
