On Tuesday, April 17th a criminal investigation was conducted in reference to a "scam artist" operating within Augusta-Richmond County. This investigation was opened after several anonymous complaints were received from citizens utilizing the Richmond County Sheriff's Office (RCSO) tip line.
Complaints circled around a subject named Lorenzo Leon Curry, aka "ZO", who was reportedly falsely representing himself as a representative of Georgia Power who can get people's electricity turned on for a cash fee.
During the course of this investigation, a RCSO investigator posing as a victim who recently had their electricity disconnected due to an outstanding electric bill made contact with Curry, who identified himself as the "light bill man" who will pay off electric bills after receiving a cash payment up front. Curry reportedly stated he has the ability to reactivate electric service for a cash fee after getting the Georgia Power account number.
After receiving a non-existent Georgia Power account number, Curry gave instructions to meet in person to collect the $125 in cash before giving Georgia Power payment confirmation number.
The plain clothed investigator later met Curry face to face at which time Curry presented a piece of paper with the #568492 and requested the $125 cash payment. Curry told the undercover investigator after he is paid the cash, to then wait approximately one hour to contact Georgia Power and give them the confirmation number to verify the bill had been paid and electric service was re-connected. The investigation found that this "confirmation number" was false. Curry was taken into custody without incident.
Georgia Power security investigators advised that Curry is not, and has never been, an employee of the company, and the security investigator further advised that all payments on accounts and bills are handled by Georgia Power either at a business location or over the phone by company finance representatives.
Lorenzo Leon Curry was booked into the Richmond County Jail on a single count of Criminal Attempt Theft by Deception. In addition, he was served with an outstanding felony probation violation warrant for his arrest.
