Columbia County Emergency Management Agency Keeping You Safe

Columbia County, GA -

From closely monitoring every major news network, to watching the WJBF live vipir 6 weather radar, the Columbia County Emergency Management Agency protects your family, has the nation's top equipment, and operators stay on the clock to keep you safe. Some of their communication units are even used at our military bases.

Columbia County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) deputy director, Rusty Welsh, says, "We did use the mobile operations center at Fort Gordon, where they needed to have an opportunity between two agencies to communicate. We've also used it for other events in the Central Savannah River Area."

Columbia County EMA has more than 15 subcommittees. Welsh is in charge of one of them, the Mobile Operations Unit, which would protect the nearly 130,000 residents if there were a massive disaster.

"If we get a call for assistance, then we scramble the mobile operations team, which is 21 volunteers. We set up a command and operator and try to fill requests," says Welsh.

The Mobile Operations Unit would prepare for, respond to, and recover from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or man-made disasters, and reduce the effects of disasters. This is possible through highly advanced training and technology. This year's equipment and smart gadgets are funded through federal dollars.

The Columbia County EMA program is based on the requirements of the Georgia Emergency Management Act of 1981. All programs are paid for by federal grants and tax dollars. Click here for more information.
