Masters Report Wednesday: Billy Payne Announces Changes Coming To The Masters

Posted: Updated:
Augusta, GA -

Since The Masters renewed their criteria to take PGA Tour winners in 2007, only 2 players have gotten in by winning the event the week before...Johnson Wagner at the Houston Open in 2008...and Martin Laird at Valero Texas Open last week.

The way players get into The Masters in the future is changing...

That was one of the few news items to come out of Masters Chairman Billy Payne's annual speech Wednesday.

And, actually maybe the most interesting thing about the changes...is that one of them goes into effect this week...

First...the new ways to get into The Masters: The top 12, not the top 16, from the previous year's Masters tournament will earn invitations
Second...the top 4 from the U.S. Open, instead of the top 8, will get in...
Third...the top 30 from the previous year's PGA money list no longer get automatic invitations...

And, here's the change that starts this week...they're increasing the number of players to make the cut from 44, to the top 50 and ties...also including anyone within 10 shots off the lead.

One other note...winners of PGA Tour events in the fall will earn invitations, as well...

Payne did talk briefly about a couple of the hot topics. When asked about admitting the first two female members in August, he reiterated that they are very excited about it.

The club did not take position on the anchoring debate...yes...of course talking about the hot topic in the golf world...players anchoring their putters...and the talk about a possible ban...
