Columbia County is getting its share of visitors during Masters Week.
On Wednesday, the Columbia County Championship Festival kicked off at the Evans Town Center Park – with Family Fun Day.
The Miller family, like many others, took a stroll in the park on Wednesday – they enjoyed the rides, they tasted some snacks and they spent some quality bonding time as a family.
"It's wonderful. We live here and the more things like this, the better it is for us," said Megan Miller.
"You see kids out here playing on a rough field. We thought it'd be a perfect place to come out here and play and spend time with families. They did a great job with it," said Jeremy Miller.
This is the first year of the Columbia County Championship Festival. Families from all across the CSRA are out here. Organizers hope this happens year after year to bring more families here during Masters.
With Masters Week patrons, organizers say events like these also help the local economy.
"Anytime you get folks spending money in our restaurants, staying in our hotels, that generates tax revenue for the county. The more we raise in sales tax, the less we have to raise property tax," said Director of Construction and Maintenance, Matt Schlachter.
County leaders say they're not taking business away from Richmond County though - just giving visitors another outlet for entertainment.
"Outdoor concerts come to Columbia County. If you want a big indoor county, then come to Richmond County. We are not competing but complementing each other – you can do outdoor, and go there for indoor venues," said Schlachter.
"I don't know if we could go to Richmond County this time of the day with so it'd be nice to have stuff on this side of town," said Megan Miller.
Organizers say parking could become a problem because they only have about 2800 spots near the park.
The Columbia County Championship Festival is slated for another 4 more years. And this week's concerts will go on rain or shine.
