The city of Augusta honored legendary Golfer Craig Stadler Monday night. The 1982 Masters Champion was given the key to the city at the annual Mayor's Masters Reception. The ceremony was held at the Augusta Common on Broad Street.
"Congratulations and here is your key to the city of Augusta, that fits my house as well," says Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver as he hands the key to Stadler.
It was Stadler's night on Monday night as the CSRA welcomed the 1982 Masters Champion back to Augusta with open arms.
"This is awesome. This is way beyond my wildest dreams ever and I did discover one thing during the last five minutes. I got more friends than I ever thought," says Stadler.
Thousands of people attended the 15th annual Mayor's Masters Reception to get a glimpse of the man with 13 PGA tour wins. Copenhaver says it's a great way to kick off Masters week each and every year.
"I love it because of the fact that not everybody can get to the tournament during Masters week, but this lets everybody be apart of the festivities," says Copenhaver.
And although most of the people we spoke with didn't have practice round tickets... just being a part of the biggest week in Augusta meant something.
"It's great. Fantastic. Lots of people, good food to try out. Fantastic," says Dr. Basil Coombs of Augusta.
More than 40 local restaurants set up tents with samples of their food and beverages.
"I had donuts, some pizza, and free Chick-Fil-A coupons," says Clifton Tippins of Augusta.
All you had to do to get inside was make a $1 donation at the front gate. That's why many of the restaurants got involved in the first place.
"The Masters is what is known for Augusta and Sticky Fingers we are known here in the CSRA. So we wanted to give back and be a part of this," says Stinky Fingers Operating Partner Asa Pontoo.
It's an event that shows off the southern hospitality of Augusta.
"It certainly does, it brings a lot of people downtown. We have had ten thousand before, so it's great for Downtown Augusta and just for the city as a whole," says Copenhaver.
Donations from Monday night's ceremony
will go to charities.
