Weeds Upstage Downtown Flowers

Augusta, GA -

It's the dark cloud behind the plan to help brighten up downtown Augusta during Masters Week.

Three years ago, the city of Augusta planted thousands of tulips downtown, including along the sides of the Broad Street parking bays.

And, while the tulips continue to bloom on top, there's a growing trouble down below in the parking area. Weeds are running rampant.

People parking downtown are noticing, saying the undergrowth doesn't make a very good impression.

"To me it takes away from the tulips and the other flowers they put out you wouldn't plant a bunch of flowers at your house and then leave weeds all the way up on your walkway up to the door," said Alison Gee, who parked in the bay in the 900 block of Broad Street on Friday.

The city spent $8,000 dollars for the tulips. They first bloomed right before Masters in 2010.
