"Out There...Somewhere": GRU Sports Era Begins

Posted: Updated:
North Augusta, SC -

The Jags were really flying at the National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships in North Augusta. They were also making history.

"I didn't realize we were doing that, I think that's great I'm excited about it we just got new jerseys," said Holton Brinson, one of the Jaguars disc golfers.

The Jaguars  have competed in this event before but as Augusta State University, but this year's there's a new name on the scoreboard Georgia Regents University -Augusta.

"Of course we think about it sometimes actually Save the A campaign hit close to home," says team captain, John Baker.

"I didn't know what to think of it like I said we're all kind of embracing it in the end the name doesn't really matter it's how we play," says disc golfer Clinton Kuglar.

"I was a big fan of Augusta State, of course I appreciate the opportunity to play under the name Georgia Regents, but I've always been an Augusta State guy," says Jason Lynn, a senior and veteran team member.

On this day, it was Georgia Regents and not ASU tangling with South Alabama.

South Alabama is also nicknamed the Jaguars, so team members were looking forward to the match up, but seeing GRU on the scheduled led to some head scratching

"Not a clue, I actually looked for Augusta State on the roster. We played with them last year in the first round," said South Alabama disc golfer Phillip Tate.

The disc golfers are the first Jaguars team to play under the moniker GRU so this is historic and an honor, but it's a double-edged sword...they're also not playing as Augusta State.

"It is a bit bitter sweet I was talking to my former teammates and it a bit different," says Lynn,

ASU was a powerhouse in disc golf winning the 2010 National Championship.

But there's a new name now, but  maybe one day GRU will do so well that any record of them will be removed from a future school pamphlet.

"Maybe if disc golf gets big enough where they put us in the pamphlet I'll be happier about that then if they'll air brush the ASU thing off or not," said Captain Baker with a laugh.

It's the new era, so get used to it: The Georgia Regents-Augusta Jaguars. There's no airbrushing that.
