Local Coach Reacts Over Rutgers' Head Basketball Coach Incident

Augusta, GA -

Mike Rice is no longer the head basketball coach at Rutgers.

Rice was fired today over a disturbing videotape that shows him abusing players.

Rutgers' head basketball coach, Mike Rice, yelled profanities, screamed homophobic slurs, hurled basketballs and kicked players --- and that has coaches all over the country talking.

"I watched it and we as coaches did this morning. None of us could believe he was getting away with it as long as he did," said Head Basketball Coach at ARC, Steve Nobles.

ARC's basketball coach – Steve Nobles—says he's not seen anything like this at schools in our area – and says he's simply shocked.

"I can understand the frustration. We all get frustrated. But the approach is unacceptable to put your hands on people," said Nobles.

Nobles' says coaches should treat athletes with dignity and respect, and students should speak out sooner if they notice a problem.

"As coaches, you use both positive and negative reinforcement.  He was belittling them, abusing them and putting his hands on them was just bad," said Nobles.

Rice issued an apology Wednesday saying he let his school, team and family down.

"There is no excuse for it. I was wrong. I want to tell everybody who's believed in me that I am deeply sorry for the pain and hardship I've caused," said former Rutgers' Head Basketball Coach, Mike Rice

"Nobody deserves to be abused physically or verbally," said Nobles.

The school's athletic director, Tim Pernetti, says he should have fired Rice last year after reports of such behavior surfaced.

Last year, Rice had to pay a 50-thousand dollar fine, was suspended for 3 games and had to take anger management classes.
