Aaron Crawford's family has been coming home to Phinizy Road for more than 20 years, and this fall they'll be welcoming the new inmate processing center at the Webster Detention Center on Phinizy Road to the neighborhood.
"I mean I'm a little skeptical, because I see them get out of 401 (Walton Way the address of the city jail) with a little brown bag and walk across the street Red Lobster like I don't want them coming to my house or anything but it's coming," said Crawford.
And with the jail processing moving to Phinizy Road, it's prompting another move, a bail bonding company.
Augusta commissioners approved rezoning this property on Phinizy Road to clear the way, even though the Planning Commission recommended denying it.
"Planning looked at it and saw a relatively stable neighborhood in spite of the fact on the other side of the street you have the jail and YDC and all those institutions what we saw we felt the neighbors deserved consideration," says Planning Director George Patty.
"All I can say is don't come to my house my door is not open," said a man named Tim, who did not want to give his full name, he lives on Phinizy Road, two doors down from the bail bonding property.
"It was only a matter of time you've got a processing center down the street of course you're going to have a bail bondsmen nearby, said Crawford.
There are other bonding companies in town, and though they didn't go on camera employees said they are also considering moving their around the clock businesses to Phinizy Road to be near the processing center.
"I don't know what to say about it, said Tim
"Do you like it?
"No I don't I mean I got kids and everything I don't need my kids around this," said Crawford.
But with the processing center opening this fall, bail bondsmen will be want to be on Phinizy Road.
"We've got one out there are we going to see more we asked George Patty.
"Probably so," said Patty.
The owners of Georgia-Carolina Bonding--the company moving to Phinizy Road say they are replacing the abandoned house on the property with what they call a low-key, professional building
And they say when someone is bonded out of jail, they are met by a friend or family member so they do not stay and hang around in the area.
