Giving Your Best: Anna Darnall

By Jennie Montgomery

Maybe it's in her genes: our February Giving Your Best winner is the daughter of a Giving Your Best winner! Anna Darnall's father, Larry Watkins, won the community volunteerism award back in the late 1990's.

Tears were flowing as Anna walked into her church fellowship hall and was surprised by a big crowd of friends and family. They were there to support the woman who has carried on her father's project, the Jesus Can, to support others during their time of need.

Anna's brother, Larry, says it's remarkable that a mom who struggles to make ends meet, constantly does without so she can help those less fortunate.

"I think our community is blessed to have someone like Anna in it. She gets out there and dedicates her time and all of it comes from her heart."

It comes from her heart, and from tradition. Anna is carrying out the dreams of her father, who started the Jesus Can in the 1990's. He died in 2006 and every Christmas since, Anna has seen to it that children have presents for Christmas.

"He was able to typically help one or two families and last year. In 2011, we were able to help 37 kids to have Christmas. I think he would be extremely proud and I only wish he could be here to see everything that we've been able to do."

Anna collects for the Jesus Can throughout the year, and gives it all to needy families... some of whom showed up at this surprise presentation, as a way to give something back to the lady who's always giving of herself. Larry is so proud of his sister that he nominated her for this award.

"We're not rich people by no means but she finds ways to raise money for people who have less things than we do."

Anna is quick to credit others for the success of her program.

"We have yard sales and bake sales and we recently started some other little fundraisers just to see how much money they can bring in. Basically it's just the support of a great church family and friends- I'm just the hands and feet but I've got a lot of support from everybody, God included. He always blesses the ministry with everything."
