Giving Your Best: Sharon Swearingen

Sharon Swearingen is an Edgefield County mom who has a lot to keep her busy: she works at a medical lab in Augusta and owns her own photography business, yet still finds time to volunteer in her community. From Edgefield County 4H leader to PTO President at Merriwether Elementary School, people say she's made a difference.

All this, while keeping up with three kids, three horses, two dogs, two cats and four chickens! No wonder friends say she deserves this special recognition.

Teachers, staff and students at Merriwether Elementary know how hard Sharon Swearingen worked to raise the bar and get kids involved in 4H.

Sharon: "Edgefield had not had one for years. So we started that up, started it at the school, had the biggest one in the state- about 125 students. We then started our own garden, in which the students completely planted everything- from tomatoes to onions to lettuce everything to use in the school cafeteria."

Sharon's mother, Connie Whitten, nominated her for the award.

Connie: "It was just astronomical the kids who became involved. She kept saying, 'Oh mom, I don't know what I'm going to do! I've got all these kids,' but she wouldn't turn down anybody. I mean she just gives 110% of herself, and I just thought, being a mom, working, I just thought it would be awesome for her to be recognized for her work."

And Sharon's volunteer efforts were a big surprise to her co-workers!

Mary Anne Franke: "When I heard all that Sharon's doing I thought, 'how does she have time to come to work everyday?' She's doing so much elsewhere and she's wonderful!"

They say actions speak louder than words, and those who see what Sharon does for others realize the impact of volunteering.

Connie: "I mean if we didn't have the people who gave their time, out of their ordinary days, to help people we wouldn't have anything. So many people get in their busy schedules and they forget about others! And these volunteers who dedicate their lives - you know, that's what means everything."

Sharon: "Thank you very much, and to my mom- thank you."
