DEVELOPING ON 6: Suspect Arrested For Paine College Sexual Assault Identified

WJBF News Channel 6 has learned the name of the man arrested for a sexual assault that happened early Thursday morning inside a Paine College dormitory.

Jairus Rayshawn Dantzler, 18, is charged with rape, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a crime, burglary, armed robbery, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

He's currently being held in the Richmond County jail.

A media conference is just wrapped up with Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree. We will continue to follow this developing story and provide the latest details as they become available.

Paine College officials tell WJBF News Channel 6, they are pleased that the sexual assault suspect is now in custody with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. The college released the following statement on the latest informaiton in the case:

"Richmond County authorities, in their investigative process, were able to identify and arrest the sexual assault perpetrator within 24 hours of the incident.

The College is appreciative of Richard Roundtree and the Sheriff’s Office in their expedient investigative process in bringing this individual to justice.

'Richmond County has done a phenomenal job,' stated Brandon Brown, Vice-President of Institutional Advancement. 'We are pleased that the campus’ 24-hour video surveillance system was able to assist in this investigation. We are also thankful to have Chief Joseph Nelson’s leadership to take us through this investigative process. Chief Nelson and College officials met with students to discuss campus safety measures and the new Chief’s vision for Paine College Campus Safety last evening. The campus also had prayer for the victim and the family. We hope that the public will be mindful and respectful of the victim’s privacy,' said Brown.

The College continues to fully cooperate with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and will provide updates as they become available."

Richmond County Sheriff's Office investigators confirm to WJBF News Channel 6, a suspect is in custody in connection to a reported rape on Paine college's campus.

There is no informaiton being released on the suspect, at this time, as the investigation is ongoing, according to investigators.

Investigators tell us, there will be a press conference to be held concerning this case at 2:00 p.m. Friday.
