Golden Apple: Holley Oellerich

By Brad Means

Holley Oellerich sees her second graders really grow throughout the school year.

"They become much better readers. Their math. We learn a lot with our addition and subtraction with regrouping. Regrouping is a big skill where they have to borrow. We used to call it borrowing, now we call it regrouping. We do a lot of work with that this year," she says.

A lot of work under Mrs. Oellerich's outstanding leadership. She knew she wanted to do this when she was just about their age.

"I had a 3rd grade teacher that inspired me to become a teacher. I've always felt the love of teaching and it's always what I've wanted to do."

In addition to the team at Greenbrier Elementary, Mrs. Oellrich relies on moms and dads to help her get the job done.

She says, "I just feel like if you have that parent-teacher communication and you have that good relationship with the parents, everything's going to work out with the student as well."

And it can all start with a conversation.

"Just build those relationships with the kids. Talk to them about their school day. Find out what's going on at school, what's bothering them, what are they having trouble with, and help them."

A great class a great school, and a job that's really rewarding. But those aren't the main things that keep Holley Oellerich coming back year after year.

She tells us, "These faces right here and the joy that I see on their faces, and the fun that we have. We have a good time don't we class, (class: "yes"), we do, we have a good time."
