Dana Thomas started her career on the other end of the educational spectrum--she worked with college students.
"But then I felt like God kind of called me into teaching the younger ones. For years I worked with a children's choir at our church and just really developed a passion and a love for that age group", she says.
That love lead her back to school for more degrees and more tools to teach. Now she gets to watch her first graders here at Euchee Creek change every day.
She says, "It's a lot of routine and you have to have a good work ethic. So we have seen them grow just tremendously. "
Today they're growing their reading skills with a lesson on blending.
"It's where we have students identify letter sounds. And not only say that this sound is whatever this sound is, but have them blend those sounds together in order to form words and that is the foundation for good reading for students, they have to be able to blend those sounds together and create and form words and be able to read words."
Congratulations Dana Thomas. A bright light in a world that, in light of recent headlines, she will never take for granted.
"It just makes me thankful and appreciative of the responsibility that I have with these young lives. Each and every one of them, they are precious. This is a job that I absolutely cherish and love."
