Investigators Still Looking For Clues In Wilkes County Murder

By Randy Key

Crime scene tape still seals off a gate near Holiday Park, the tape a bright reminder of a very dark crime police say happened in these woods back in September.

The body of Jeffery Gebhardt, 35, was found in a swampy area inside of the wildlife management area. Sources tell WJBF News Channel 6 the hunter was stabbed to death.

Investigators with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office spent days searching the woods for clues. The evidence they collected was sent off to the state crime lab, and that’s where the case now stands.

On the weekend Gebhardt was killed, more than 100 hunters were in the woods, and investigators have interviewed a lot of those people, several of them traveled with Gebhardt from Blairsville, Georgia to these Wilkes County woods.

Wilkes County Sheriff Mark Moore tells me he hopes investigators will know more about this crime once this evidence gets back from the crime lab. But, he says even then police will have to re-interview some of the people that they’ve already talked to. Then, it’s still not clear if they will have a clear suspect in this crime.
