“When you see car seats, it's an image you don't want,” says Britton Hernlen, who cleaned the scene, “especially when you go to sleep at night.  It stays with you.”

“This one was one of the worst,” he says. “We pull cars in all the time and that car, it looks like they had to use the jaws of life on it."

Richmond County officers did have to cut two of the four cars in this accident open to get the victims out.

“When we get to one of these accidents like this, it's difficult to piece together the vehicles, and you see disturbing images,” says Herlen.

“They were going to the wrong way,” says Lt. Randy Prickett. “It was East bound on a West bound.”

And then the inevitable.

“The car tried to go into two other SUVs, caused them to crash, then continued on and hit more vehicles,” says Prickett.

Then, that SUV driven by 31-year-old Monique Sullivan flipped. Witnesses say her four year old son crawled out of the back glass then collapsed. His car seat, books, and Bible littered the roadway.

Police says the first car hit took the hardest hit: Its driver, 32-year-old Amelia Hiltz, is in critical condition.

Sullivan and her husband were both in surgery earlier Monday afternoon; their son is okay.

Police say Sullivan will be charged with driving the wrong way on the road and that other charges could be pending.
