The crime scene where a hunter was found dead in Wilkes County is back to being sealed off after investigators opened it up for several hours Wednesday morning and afternoon as they went back in the woods searching for any evidence that they might have missed, that could lead them to find the person who killed 35-year-old Jeffrey Shawn Gebhardt, of Blairsville, Georgia.
Tuesday, we learned that police are now investigating Gebhardt’s death as a homicide.
Now, we’re learning even more information about this case, including information that Gibhardt’s body was found in a very marshy section of the property, near Holliday Park. This wildlife management area is a very large section of property, a very large area that police are having to search.
We’ve also learned that more than 100 other hunters were here this past weekend, when Gebhardt died, so police are still working to get in contact with a lot of people.
At this time, there is a lot of information investigators cannot release, because investigators are still trying to narrow down and find a suspect.
Investigators are asking for anyone who has any information about this case to give them a call. “I feel strongly that there is somebody out there who’s seen or heard something that could be of value to us. They may not realize that it could be of value to us, so I would simply ask that anybody who was in the area call the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office," says GBI agent Mike Ayers.
I asked Agent Ayers about this section of land where Gebhardt’s body was found, this marshy area. I asked if that was a common place for hunters to go to hunt. He told me that, as a hunter, it wasn’t somewhere he would have chosen, but there were tracks through that area. That site is something that investigators are looking at closely.
We will continue to follow this story and bring you the latest information as it becomes available.
