Giving Your Best: Caroline Wallace and Emma Kate Few

By Jennie Montgomery

We surprised Emma Kate Few and Caroline Wallace, along with friends and family, because they are putting their talents to good use, raising money for the Humane Society. They have a target audience, their peers… and a product that sells:  DFA Today!

Caroline Wallace says they got the idea to do the school newspaper over summer break.

“It's an at home project and we have the different students write everything up, and then I put it into a newspaper format, and then we sell it at school."

Take two rising 7th graders, find a common cause to support, and turn their imaginations loose.

Emma Kate Few says she know Caroline visited the animal shelter and wanted to help.

"So we decided that we would donate our money to the Humane Society because the animals can't help themselves."

That’s pretty much how the hip and happening DFA Today newspaper was born.

Emma Kate is one of the writers.

"Different students submit different articles about news going on at Davisdon. Some people do like short stories, I have a fashion column, Caroline is the editor, and we just have like different stories in there, stuff that students at Davidson write."

Emma Kate and Carolina love animals and they wanted to raise money for the Humane Society. So last summer, they came up with a plan to raise a little cash, and keep their friends and classmates informed about what’s going on.

Caroline’s mother, Donna Lewis says they order the papers from a local printer.

“And they sell as many as they can, and we have not kept good track of it but I feel like they have donated close to $350 to the shelter, and we have probably another $150 at home to donate."

Her father, Jim Wallace, says it’s great to see 7th graders with such a passion.

"It's been so satisfying for them and particularly because they are giving the money, all of the money, to something they love- a cause they like, to the animals."

Their friend, Jada Hampton, took notice and nominated Emma and Caroline for the Giving Your Best award.

Jada: "I act, dance and I write."

Jennie: "Super! Do you help contribute to DFA Today?"

Jada: "Well, I was thinking about it after I did this!"

Jennie: "SHE just bought some column inches, in my opinion!"
